Tax
Savings for Boaters in Beaufort County, SC
Beaufort County has recently passed two ordinances which will have a
major impact on boating in the Hilton Head area. The only other county
in South Carolina to do so is Horry County in Myrtle Beach. The first
is that all boats in the county, no matter the size, will be exempted
42.75% of their fair market value from property tax. This effectively
lowers the ratio from 10 to 6%. For example on a boat valued at
$100,000 the tax savings from 2008 to 2009 is $918.79!
The second ordinance is aimed at vessels in the county for a short
period of time. It increases the time you can stay exempt from taxes to
180 aggregate days in a single year. This doubles the amount of time
from previous years. Additionally, if a boat spends any time here for
service or repairs, they are exempt from the tolling of time.
We have already heard reports of boats from the Charleston area moving
to Beaufort County to take advantage of these savings! This is one more
reason to make Skull Creek Marina your home port.
